Broken Worlds Empty
PostSubject: Broken Worlds   Broken Worlds I_icon_minitimeThu Apr 15, 2010 9:10 pm

Overview:
It is the year 107502 by the Earth calender. Humanity has branched away from Earth and off into the stars in search of planets and adventure. Early colonists gave up technology and replaced it with what they called "magic" making new ways to live and others brought the two different systems together to work for the better. Some of the early colonists began to adapt to their new planets creating new races that suffer from racism from some humans who believe they are pure.

Specifics:
The planet Gemma has been attacked by the Djinn. They are looking for a new planet to call theirs after destroying their own, Terra, in an internal war. Gemma seemed like a good target for the technologically advanced Djinn. They have the experience in planetary war on their side as well as the fact that they quickly overwhelm the space defenses of Gemma and destroy all fleeing space ships. The Hydras were caught unaware and are now rallying up their forces to defend their home planet. Anyone who just so happened to be on the planet at the time was immediately drafted in. Not like they could leave if they wanted to, anyhow. Will these groups be able to help the people of Gemma repel the invading Djinn?

Notes:
  • Gemma is about 85% Hydra, 10% human with the other 5% being various other races. Most characters should be the ones trapped on the planet for various reasons belonging to various ships. Although most would be human, there are a lot of other races in the transport sector.

  • Yes, I did use a dictionary to create this thread. Don't judge me! x3

  • Human is implied in the species list.

Species
When space travel was made possible in the 8450's, humans went in colonies to planets which could sustain them. Over time these colonies grew an adapted to their new planets, becoming different enough from humans to deserve their own species under the homo genus. These were evolved enough so that they could no longer produce viable offspring with humans.

  • Hydras (Homo polycephale - Many-headed Human)

The natives of the Planet we are on. One of the first colonies to start, they arrived in 8485 CE on the planet Gemma (Jewel) formerly known as Gliese 581c. It is five times the size of Earth and revolves around a red dwarf star. The planet is very rich in diamonds, thus the name. The Hydras have a sort of shared intelligence, a hive mind if you will. They are short, averaging 5’2” for females and 5’7” for males. They have dark hair and fair skin and are usually sturdy with high bone density and muscle mass. They see more into the infrared end of the light spectrum and less of the ultraviolet, due to the light given off by their sun.

  • Djinn (Homo volans - Flying Humans)

This is the race that is attacking. They came to the planet Terra in 11,029 CE. Due to the Earth-like planet they arrived on, they did not change much. They usually have dark hair and fair skin and are of the same height as humans. They are technologically advanced and so spent a lot of their time off the ground. Due to various circumstances their home planet was destroyed and they went off in search of a planet to take over. Setting their sights on Gemma, they began their attack.

  • Naiads (Homo aquaticus - Water-Dwelling Humans)

Their name comes from the Greek water nymphs, and they live up to their name. They arrived on the planet Aequor (Sea) in 8551 CE. Aequor is 99% water. Fresh water, mind you. They mostly stayed on land and in boats for a while, but that soon became difficult. Over time they developed webbed fingers and feet and could hold their breath for hours at a time. They are tall, averaging 5’9 for females and 6’2 for males.

  • Dryads (Homo chloroderma - Green-Skinned Humans)

These are particularly unusual among the other races. A mutant gene took root producing chlorophyll in the body. Like plants, they could absorb sunlight to produce sugars. They are very tall, females averaging 6'4" and males at 6'5". They are rather unique also in that they lack the sexual dimorphism prevalent in most humanoid species. Their home planet, Flumen (River), is very watery but other than that the planet is fairly barren. There are no plants but many insect-like creatures.

  • Nocturne (Homo potestas - Strong Humans)

Little is known of the Notcturne, they are few and far between. Their start was when a few people wanted a fresh start far away from Humans and all their issues, to simply be left alone to have their own ideal society. They got on a small cruiser in 8520 CE and went for the furthest planet known in the cosmos, Barrenos known for its grim and barren climate but its strange minerals said to be the cause for the mutations that allowed for life. It was there, on the planet that saw no light that the small group of people made their home. Thus they got their name Nocturne, evolved from humans and mutated by the planets minerals they became an oddity and in some cases called 'abominations' thus they keep to themselves. Nocturne's are unable to make more Nocturne's, they can mate as much as they want but they inevitably make something of the race of the partner and they do not mate with each other though the reason is unknown. For the most part they keep to themselves though about a dozen went off on their own, when asked about what they experienced they say nothing of it only that 'you don't want to know'. The dozen that exist throughout the cosmos are powerful, usually offensive specialists, and take up leadership roles with ease. Also, the lifespan of a Nocturne is unknown due to the fact that no one knows when they are born and on record none have died.

  • Bionics (Homo ferratus - Iron-Clad Humans)

These are a species of genetically and cybernetically enhanced humans. They evolved abnormally large and fully developed brains, the unmodified Homo ferratus can do advanced calculus at age 6. This species of bio-cybernetic enhanced humans were first sighted in 98896 CE. They vary in many ways, from having synthetic skin, to appearing completely robotic. Either way, they consist of Homo ferratus DNA and are capable of child birth. When they turn 2 years of age, it is considered a rite of passage to be modified into whatever society deems fit for the individual to be. This is determined by early psyche evaluation of the toddler.
Their origins are well documented and they are known to be descendants of a distant and no longer inhabited colony on the planet Osaea 114. Their home world (conveniently called Home-World 2) is a metal-rich planet within a metal-rich asteroid belt circling near the red sun of their solar system (which they named Home-System 2). Ideal for the creation of more cybernetics since they use both metal in creation and solar energy for a backup power supply. Over the years they have developed themselves into incredibly specific categories. However, they are all capable of individual thoughts and actions, they share a common database-and-communications-center (called DACC) that they are all connected to without exception. The database holds records of every Bionic in existence and other Bionics are able to recognize each other by physical scanning, or by picking up a broadcast by another Bionic on an open frequency (either within or outside of DACC)

Name: Karya Kusakabe
Age: Unknown
Appearance: Broken Worlds Dryad_
Gender: Female
Species: Dryad/Human
Weapon(s): Nichogama (Dual Sickles)
Bio: Karya's mother was a dryad and her father was a human. So, while she has chlorophyll like all the other dryads, for some strange reason, her skin is pale, like a human. To make herself seen as a dryad, as well as a human, Karya wears clothing completely made of plants, which she makes herself. However, even when wearing plants, Karya isn't accepted by the Dryads. After years of exclusion, she finally moved--to Gemma. She had heard that the Hydras were more generally accepting of others, and she was right, they didn't mind her. Of course, that may be because she wasn't a human-hydra or hydra-dryad mix... But one question still remains, what happened to her parents? Truthfully, no one knows, not even Karya. At one point she was considering leaving Gemma in search of them, but she realized that she didn't want to leave her new found home for two random people who abandoned her, as far as she knows. Instead, Karya spent her time doing other hobbies, such as the art of weilding dual nichogama, which are double sickles. Karya requires little to survive since she makes her own food naturally--she just needs water and shelter. She became a nurse to pay the bills, learning much about medical care as she continued practicing with the nichogama. Now, with the Djinn threatening her home, Karya is willing to do anything to save Gemma.

Well, my post is gone. I can't believe that someone would be so immature as to remove constructive criticism. I want to help, but if people don't listen what can I do? I'm sorry that you're not perfect, and I'm sorry that my post brought that to light, but hey, none of us are perfect.

Whoa, the year is 107502? That means it's 105,492 years from now. That's enough time for the human race to have evolved with the current rate of technological advancement from physical bodies into amorphous multi-dimensional entities of pure consciousness in energy form. Or for the human race to have killed themselves off by nuclear winter and to have a new dominant species evolve from the ashes based on silicon and not carbon and then with a similar advancement rate for them to have evolved from physical bodies into amorphous multi-dimensional entities of pure consciousness in energy form. Unless this takes place in an entirely different universe that is completely unrelated to earth (and which would make the earth years pointless and the mythological names and humanoid forms illogical unless improbability theory is taken into account), then the amount of years is completely random and illogical too, even for sci-fi. Now, to calculate a more realistic time span let's use some historical reference points. In 1969 there was the first man on the moon (here's some fun space exploration references: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_exploration#Mars). By 2030-2070 we might have men on mars. For space travel to be ethical (due to incomprehensibly long amounts of time it takes--logically, somewhere around 10+ years JUST to get to mars) we would need to have developed some sort of way to make it faster or easier, for example, warp travel or stasis. If technology advances at the rate it has been we might have that somewhere between 2150-2250. From there is the early stages of exploration just beyond the solar system, which we already know contains nothing of interest (unless it's europa, that has life possibilities, they're just locked under barren ice which might hold an ocean underneath). So, using the improbability theory a world will eventually be found with life or that can sustain life. The only problem is that it won't be close, so to account for exploration time we add another 300-500 years. That gives a logical window of 2450-2750 for a setting of early exploration. Now, for the evolution, on earth most interesting stuff regarding human evolution happened .01 million years ago (see page 8 of the ESRT: http://www.newyorkscienceteacher.com/sci/site/files/esrt/ESRT-2010.pdf *you can also use this as a reference for evolution times of native life on the new planets). That's without technology. With the proposed advancement stated prior, genetics and nanotechnology would be like child's play to us especially considering that right now we have the human genome mapped and that most of our produce is already genetically engineered and that we already have nanoscopic motors created. With that in mind evolving would be easy and could facilitate such changes in a much shorter amount of time, say 200-400 years for the genome to change to the point of genetic incompatibility which would bring the time span to 2650-3150. You'll also have to give reasons for the changes such as with the Hydras. Just stating random facts doesn't make sense and leads to terrible Mary-Sues, so here's a theoretical way to tie it in to all this. They live in a system around a red dwarf star which would make the habitability of the planet difficult to almost impossible (see habitability section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_dwarf), but if they lived on a moon orbiting said planet then a day/night cycle would keep the moon from having unchanging temperature extremes, unlike the main planet. Being diamond miners and living underground would also make sense regarding the fluctuating state of brightness and radiation flares emitted by the star because depth would help protect them from it. Evolution wise, living underground on a planet that already gets almost no UV light would make skin pigments useless which should make them incredibly pale, so no dark hair. Seeing in infrared and and having a hive mind to optimize efficiency could logically be explained by wireless nanotechnology, but having multiple heads doesn't make sense as they are a mining race, which would mean that extra limbs would be much more helpful. Also, kudos to you for making very much sense with them being short (the space constraints of living in mines) and having high bone density and muscle mass (a planet five times larger than earth would have a massive amount amount of gravity that the body would need to compensate for). Those developments could be explained by the natural evolutionary progress augmented by gene manipulation for body optimization. Also, on a side note, IT'S THE GODDAMN FUTURE. Who the hell would fight with a chained sais or dual sickles? It'd be like that one scene in Indiana Jones where the guy with the sword comes up and Indie just shoots him.
"BEWARE MY SICKLES OF FURY!
*BANG!*
"That's why we developed space lazer guns!"
Seriously, this is sci-fi. Use some creativity. Find a random noun and make it into a space weapon instead of taking something so cliched that Organization XIII would use it. Here, I'll show you how easy it is to make something awesome:
For random nouns (http://www.desiquintans.com/noungenerator.php) I got "storm".
So, how about a device that harnesses the weather/nature to use as a weapon?
Example:
"STOP! I WILL KILL YOU WITH MY CHAINED SAIS!"
"Oh yeah? Activate the Storm Dissonance generator!"
*Insert earthquake/lightning/flood/rapid plant growth/vacuum of space here*
"Oh no! Why did I ever think that I could counter ultra science with bronze age technology!?"
On top of that, having illogically amazingly sexy and poorly dressed 17-year-olds wield such weapons is illogical in itself. Please, at least make them legal adults unless their age is proportional to their species's average lifespan.
So yeah. In conclusion, good sci-fi needs a real scientific basis for believable technobabble, otherwise it's just silly, and seriously, it's the future. Unchain your imaginations, don't be cliched. Let loose, think outside the Suethor box and write some damn good sci-fi.
Oh, and one more thing; everything stated prior is inconsequential if they really use "magic", in which case this is fantasy, not sci-fi. Sorry to be a killjoy, but it's in my name XD

I believe the Sci-Fi is just fine. Honestly it is exactly that, Science Fiction. We don't know what the world will have in 105,492 years from now but it really doesnt matter. The fic is a fic. We might as well enjoy it while we have it cause this one seems like it would be alot of fun. Especially since I gets to use a picture that I've been saving.

[Yes Duckie, Saving that pic since back at the Realm of Shadows].

So lets just move on from this entire Mary Sue thing in other peoples RP. If you don't want mary sues then make a RP for us all to join and tell us EXACTLY what you DONT want. So that we can make non-Sue characters just for your rp.
